This morning, I followed the red & blue lights and the smell of donuts to find myself at the West Chicago Dunkin where “Cop on a Rooftop” was going hard.
Cop on a Rooftop raises money for Special Olympics and is just one of several events that the WCPD puts on to raise awareness and funds for our special athletes.
Officer Robbie took a few minutes and filled me in on the efforts that police departments all over the US take to raise funds. Since 1986, over a BILLION dollars has been raised for Special Olympics by PD efforts.
A couple highlights of this morning:
1. Meeting Bartlett PD’s adorable comfort dog, Maverick - who turned 4 yesterday. I think he could smell the dog treats in my coat pocket. 🥳
2. Watching high school kids volunteer their time and really hustle to help WCPD reach their goal. Maybe it’s from my time as a middle school teacher or a youth leader, but I think there’s nothing comparable to teenage energy. ⚡️
Today’s goal for West Chicago is $15k. Event ends at lunchtime today.
Please stop by one of your local Dunkins. Wave hello to the officers on the roof. Make a donation. Get a free donut. And make your community a better place for those with special needs. That’s how easy it is to make margin for someone else.
Together, we can build a stronger, more united community. 🌍💪
